Why does accurate medical translation matter?

A patient's right to understand what is happening during their treatment is enshrined in Turkish law. The Patient Rights Regulation issued by the Turkish Ministry of Health states that a patient must be provided with sufficient and clear information about the medical procedures being performed or to be performed on them, their reasons, and how they will be carried out, in a manner suited to the patient's physical and psychological condition. This right is not actually realized if the patient does not speak Turkish and has not received an accurate translation of what the doctor says.

Medical translation is not like general translation. A simple error in conveying a medication name, dosage, or diagnosis can change the entire course of treatment. Medical terms carry very precise meanings, and sometimes words sound similar but differ completely in medical meaning. In addition, prior consent forms for treatment contain precise legal and medical details, and understanding them correctly is essential before signing.

• Healthcare facilities holding an International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate (under the International Health Tourism Regulation in effect since 2017 and later updated) are required to operate a dedicated international patient coordination unit, whose duties include translation during admission, treatment, and discharge, according to specific language standards set out in the law
• Not every healthcare facility in Turkey holds this authorization, and even facilities that do may not provide Arabic-language coverage specifically at all times or for every specialty
• Relying on a companion or a relative as an untrained interpreter during a sensitive medical encounter carries real risk: an inaccurate understanding of the doctor's question about symptoms or drug allergies, or of the doctor's explanation of a diagnosis and treatment options, can lead to a medical decision based on incomplete information
• Accuracy is not limited to the moment of consultation but extends to documents: medical reports, test and imaging results, and follow-up plans after returning to one's country of residence. An inaccurate translation of these documents can confuse any doctor following up later outside Turkey

Do all hospitals in Turkey provide an Arabic-speaking staff? No. The availability of Arabic-speaking staff or translation service varies from one facility to another, and even facilities holding an International Health Tourism authorization are not required to cover Arabic specifically, but rather a minimum level of language support under the regulation's standards.
