Who can apply for a tourist residence permit?

Short-term tourist residence lets you stay in Turkey after your visa or visa-exemption period ends, provided the reason for residence is genuinely tourism and not a substitute for a work, study, or family-reunification permit. The immigration directorate looks at your whole travel plan — where you'll stay, how long, and why you need exactly that period — and may ask for extra documents to support your answer.

The maximum duration for a single permit is two years, but the actual period granted depends on your file and the directorate's discretion — it is not an automatic right guaranteed to every applicant.

Important note about Istanbul neighborhoods: some neighborhoods are closed to new foreigner registrations, and the list changes from time to time without always a clear official announcement. Do not sign a lease or pay a deposit before confirming that the exact address (neighborhood + district) accepts new registrations at the time of application — this is the most important practical step before anything else.

Foreign documents (birth certificate, power of attorney, criminal record...) usually need an apostille and a certified Turkish translation. Some additional documents may be requested depending on your nationality and file details.

Can I travel outside Turkey while my application is being reviewed? Yes, as long as each trip doesn't exceed 15 days, and you carry your residence application document and fee receipts with you. Exceeding this period returns you to the standard visa rules.

What if my application is rejected? You cannot apply for the same reason within 6 months of the rejection, but you can apply for a different reason if your legal stay period is still valid. The rejection decision sent to you explains your rights to object.

Is an "income declaration" enough without actual supporting documents? The declaration on the form is often enough, but the directorate may request actual proof such as a bank statement or salary slip depending on your file — it's best to prepare this in advance rather than relying on the declaration alone.
